The Reproduction of Sound Recordings Licence

A licence for the Reproduction of Sound Recordings by establishments for the purpose of public performance will be granted to the applicant subject to agreement to the terms of the licence.

This licence is for an establishment or DJ which no longer play sound recordings from a CD or similar records. Instead, the sound recordings are reproduced onto computerized or other storage system.

The licence gives permission to use all or any of the sound recordings, the copyright in which is owned by or exclusively licensed to the recording companies represented by RIPS

Licence fees are generally assessed under the standard tariffs and are granted either on an annual basis or to cover "one-off" single events. Usage which does not fall into the standard tariffs (including multi-media, internet, etc.) will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Enquiries should be made to RIPS.

LICENCE FOR THE:

(2) REPRODUCTION & PUBLIC PERFORMANCE OF MUSIC VIDEOS INTO PORTABLE MEDIA DEVICES (E.G. MP3 AND MP4 PLAYERS) BY ESTABLISHMENTS FOR DEMONSTRATION PURPOSES

A licence for the Reproduction of Sound Recordings by retail outlets for the purpose of public performance for demonstration purpose will be granted to the applicant subject to agreement to the terms of the licence.

This licence is for the reproduction of sound recordings into portable media devices (including but not limited to MP3/MP4 players such as the Apple iPod, Creative Zen and Microsoft Zune) that store, organise and play digital music for demonstration purposes. It also includes the reproduction of music videos into such devices, and subsequent public performance on these devices for demonstration purposes.

The launch of this licence scheme simplifies the obtaining of licences for these acts by allowing an establishment to obtain one licence from RIPS, which administers the scheme on behalf of all of the Record Companies. Establishments which may need to obtain this licence include retailers of portable media devices. There are two (2) categories of licences depending on whether the retailer is selling portable media devices which store, organise, play both digital music and videos, or only digital music.

Licence For The Reproduction of Sound Recordings as Background Music for Wedding Videography or Photo Montage

A licence for the Reproduction of Sound Recordings as background music for wedding videography or photo montage by wedding videographers will be granted to the applicant subject to agreement to the terms of the licence.

An ad-hoc licence for the Reproduction of Sound Recordings as background music for wedding videography or photo montage by wedding couples will be granted to the applicant subject to agreement to the terms of the licence.

With effect from 1 January 2010, RIPS has been administering and operating on behalf of the Record Companies this licence scheme for the reproduction of sound recording as background music for qualifying wedding videographs.

This launch of this licence scheme simplifies the obtaining of licences for the reproduction of the Record Companies' sound recordings as background music for qualifying wedding videographs. Prior to the implementation of this licence scheme, an establishment intending to reproduce the Record Companies' sound recordings would have had to approach each relevant Record Company separately for permission to do so. With the implementation of this licence scheme, such an establishment would only need to obtain one licence from RIPS, which administers the scheme on behalf of all of the Record Companies.

Establishments which may need to obtain this licence include:-

  • wedding studios;
  • freelance wedding videographers.
